In Yoga, Tantra and Ayurveda the concept of the Tattwas, the elements in all of existence is central to the framework and understanding of the many strands of our lives and selves. Within these elements, Agni, the fire element is of major significance, it sits in a central position in Tantric practice, Ayurveda’s view on our health and much of the spiritual and ritualistic practice of India. This is because of the recognised ability of fire to reduce all it encounters to its base elements, to purify, so in our being, this subtle fire likewise influences our digestion of food, experience and life in general. If we overwhelm fire with material it goes out, likewise, too much food, too much interaction with the world dampens our fires. Therefore one of the easiest ways to strengthen it is to reduce the intake of material of a physical or more subtle nature, on the physical level we can fast, eat less, or pay attention to the type of food its complexity etc, we can apply these same principles on a mental level, perhaps a fast from tv, less internet, social media, a day away from crowds or busy places At this time of the year as we enter holiday season, perhaps this gives us the chance to move into this realm of rest, so that we may return invigorated. So whether your planning a holiday away, or having a rest at home, hopefully the time off this summer will allow your fire to have it’s vigour restored so that you can return back to your usual activity and schedule bright eyed and refreshed!
